CAW Local 567 Supports Mahar Inquiry
November 26, 2003 - 1:00pm EST
Kerry Pither, a CAW Local 567 member, and an activist with the Solidarity Network, has been working closely with the Arar family to uncover the real truth about what happened to Maher Arar and why.

Mr. Arar, an Ottawa resident, visiting in the U.S. was picked up and against his will, deported to Syria where he remained imprisoned and tortured for almost a year. In the meantime, his family, desparate about his situation, began contacting the Canadian government, and only after the assistance of various individuals and groups was Mahar released and returned to Canada.

It is clear from the appalling lack of information from senior government officials and politicians that there is a lot more information that needs to be brought forward to uncover why Mahar was initially detained and how a Canadian citizen can be deported by the U.S. to Syria, a country widely condemned for its torture of prisoners.

The Mahar family, along with numberous support groups, and his lawyer, Lorne Waldman, are calling for the Canadian government to establish a public inquiry.

CAW Local 567 supports the call and urges you to sign the on-line petition which can be found on Amnesty International's web site: http://www.amnesty.ca/
